dog treats – that you could eat

I stopped by a local pet store the other day to pick up some DOG TREATS for Fynnigan. While I was browsing the plethora of junky to organic dog snacks, I heard the funniest conversation:

DAUGHTER – Let’s get some treats for Brandy.

MOTHER – OK, but check the ingredients on the back of the bag. I don’t want her having any sugar, salt or crazy chemicals.

DAUGHTER – This one looks good…sugar-free, salt-free and completely organic.

MOTHER – Perfect! Where would you like to have lunch?

DAUGHTER – How about KFC?…

Homemade DOG TREATS are crazy simple to make and cost a fraction of the commercial ‘organic’ dog treats. I love the idea of being able to control exactly what Fynn is eating when we give him something beyond his normal food. Take a look at the ingredient list the next time you buy a bag of doggie cookies. They’re full of salt and sugar! My recipe has no added salt and the only sweetness comes in the form of dried blueberries. They take no time and actually smell delicious while they’re baking. I considered eating one myself!

Dog Treats

DOG TREATS
Preheat oven 350*f

1 ¼ cup buckwheat
1 cup oats
½ cup wheat germ
½ cup dried blueberries
1 egg
½ cup plain yogurt
1/8 cup unsalted chicken broth

Dog Treats

THE STEPS:

  • Place ingredients in the bowl of your stand mixer.
  • Using the dough hook, knead dough until it forms a ball (approximately 3 minutes)
  • Divide dough in 2 equal pieces.
  • Place each piece on a large rectangle of waxed paper and roll up – twist ends.
  • Chill for 1 hour
  • Slices into ½ inch cookies then cut them in half.
  • Place dog treats on parchment lined cookie sheet
  • Bake for 30 minutes

THE LOVE: These cookies have no staying power. I freeze mine once they cool completely. They thaw in twenty minutes.
